Rangers an Devils will play their first of six matches, which they will play in this season. My first idea of this match was larger number of goals. But, there are some thing that have changed it. Firstly, yesterday Rangers played excellent match at Boston, winning against Bruins, 3:2. It was big success, regarding to the shape and strength of Bruins, especially their defense. Rangers played without the first forwards, which are injured, so that three scored goals at Boston are the feat. To tell the truth, at goal of Bruins was not goalie Thomas, who has been in excellent form. Speaking of goalies, at the Rangers' goal will backup goalie Martin Biron who stopped 24 of 25 shots in his first start with the club, a 2-1 win Thursday at Toronto. It was Biron's 32nd career start against the Maple Leafs, his second most against any NHL team. After the first three matches in the season, ended with over 5.5 goals, the last three they ended with under that margin - 1:3, 2:1, 3:2. One of the important reason lies in the injuries of players. Captain Chris Drury is expected to miss six weeks with a broken finger, while Marian Gaborik (shoulder) could be out a month. Vinny Prospal is out 6-8 weeks with a knee injury. Devils won only two of eight matches played in this season. Both victories were away from the home, and both were with a small number of goals - 1:0 after OT and 3:0. Overall, they ended five of eight matches with under 5.5 goals. In the last round they defeated against Buffalo Sabres. NJ Devils scored only 14 goals on 8 played matches. They also have problems with injuries. Defender Anton Volchenkov has missed six straight games with a broken nose and stiff neck. Colin Fraser (broken hand) is out 4-6 weeks, as is Brian Rolston (sports hernia). Bryce Salvador (concussion) and Anssi Salmela (knee) are both on long-term IR.
Finally, there are another one reason for that bet. Eight their opening matches in the last eleven seasons ended with under 5.5. Incidentally, I do not know, but I took that information as relevant. Goals are always a lottery, and because of that I will take that with middle stake.
