The first week of the English Premier League brought plenty of surprising results, with Arsenal's shocking defeat against West Ham being the highlight that won't be forgotten very soon. Things are moving quickly, however, and the teams will be back in action in just a few days, so let's evaluate where they stand and what might be some good picks for the weekend.

In fact, the action gets underway on Friday with Aston Villa taking on Manchester United, who were quite lucky to win their first match of the season. However, they are still much better than Aston Villa and you could also speak about a bit of luck when it comes to their performance against Bournemouth in the first round, so it'd feel natural to see each come to their own and the scales to be balanced in the second round. Manchester United on the -1AH handicap looks like the pick to us, 2.20 with BetVictor.

On Saturday, we simply have to have a play on Swansea at home against Newcastle. They showed plenty of good stuff in their 2-2 draw against Chelsea last weekend and it wasn't all down to the red card, so, considering that they will now play at home against a much weaker opponent, there's every chance that they are going to get the full set of points. Betway have the home win at 1.95 and that's a price we're willing to take.

West Ham also look appealing at 2.30 with Betway, not only because of their splendid performance against Arsenal, but also because of how Leicester seem to be overrated only because their beat Sunderland. They did beat Sunderland and that was great, but this is going to be a whole new challenge and one that they are by no means guaranteed to win. At home, their chances would be good. Away, not so much.

Arsenal will be up against Crystal Palace on Sunday and, if the first round was anything to go by, we see nothing to give the Gunners such a big edge. Sure, they are a strong outfit and they are bound to bounce back very soon, but Crystal Palace have goals of their own in this season and what they did in the first round was pretty spectacular. Pardew will certainly want to build some sort of a fortress at home and the squad looks very competitive even if you pitch it against the top teams. There are plenty of options, but we quite like both teams to score at 1.83 with BetVictor.

Our selections:

Manchester United (-1AH) to beat Aston Villa at 2.20 @ BetVictor

Swansea to beat Newcastle at 1.95 @ Betway

West Ham to beat Leicester at 2.30 @ Betway

Crystal Palace/Arsenal - Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.83 @ BetVictor
